My Country

My Country

A Poem by Rassey
"

Yes we're gay, but we're human beings as well.

"
My country stands strong
My country stands free
My country is where I belong
My country loves me

My country loves me?

My country shines the light on two men holding guns
Leaving two men in love in the dark feeling undone

My country took centuries in their attempts to rise above
To finally understand love is love
Freedom to marry nation wide
Aren’t you happy we finally see eye to eye?

The religious freedom bill is something worth perceiving
We’re almost treated as human beings
“Ma’am, you’re not welcomed here”
“But why? Are we not dressed in the right attire?
“We don’t service the queer
Separate but equal is their goal
Because segregation worked so well after all

We’ve died more than 160 deaths on screen
“Bury your gays!” We continue to scream
Stray bullets, poison, and torture
Don’t you know our only purpose is for heterosexual closure?

The LGBTQIA community is not their main priority
Keep in mind we’re not labeled as the majority
“Make America great again” for who?
Not me and not you

We’re born into a homophobic society
Where being LGBTQIA seems to be insanity

From the Laramie Shepard in Wyoming
A family is still in mourning
To the long road in Jasper Texas
We’re all still precious
From Lincoln Memorial Park in Nebraska
It’s about time they asked us
To the beating Pulse in Orlando
Everything you’ve done you can’t undo

There’s still so much more to do
My country stands strong
My country stands free
My country is where I belong
My country loves me

My country loves me?

My country can’t stand the idea of me.
