Southern Hyporcites

Southern Hyporcites

A Poem by Raven Starhawk

Hypocritical imbeciles, terminate your flapping tongue

Have you neglected accountabilities you have surmounted?

Profess to have merits, ethical or pious dogmas, doctrines

Feigns some enviable or visibly sanctioned arrogance

Especially in your private being, sentiments, or declarations that belie your public statements.

Author's Note

Raven Starhawk
I would like to personally dedicate this poem to my husband's hypocritical family who hail from Alabama and Kentucky. One who puts on a mask and feigns himself to be what he is not; a dissembler in religion. Our Lord severely rebuked the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy (Matt. 6:2, 5, 16). "The hypocrite's hope shall perish" (Job 8:13). The Hebrew word here rendered "hypocrite" rather means the "godless" or "profane," as it is rendered in Jer. 23:11, i.e., polluted with crimes. By the way I am only quoting the Bible so in case they read this they can maybe have some sort of understanding.

This is the kind of poems that I truly support! People should know what its like before they do all talking and sometimes backbiting. Great poem.

I assume every reader would have some one in their lives to whom they would dedicate this power packed poem. I do. The word-play is fantastic. Well written.

Raven, you really nailed hypocrates with this one. I have a few I'd like to dedicate this to as well. I love your writing. You are amazing.

I consider this piece as your statement based on your personal experience.
You have generalized the presence of hypocrites in all societies of the world.
Very well penned.
In this context,I like to share my experience of Kentucky acquired through my
reading of 'Passion & Prejudice: A Family Memoir' written by Sallie Bingham (Author) long ago.
Thank you Raven for sharing your feelings
