Broken Innocence

Broken Innocence

A Poem by Heather Phelps

The walls know her story

They tell it well

Her skin softer than silk

Her hair radiant as the sun

Just a bad twist of fate

That she wound up

Where the walls have ears.

It started out

innocent enough

Just playing around

being a kid

Then it turned bad

Her mother

crying at night

Her father

in a rage

Her friends all left her

then her mother did too

Her father turned

his rage towards her

a bruised cheek one day

a broken leg the next

she no longer knew

how to be a child

she was seven

when he finally did

the worst thing possible

he killed his own blood

she has the wings of an angel

the heart of a saint

but most important

she is free of pain.
