HURDLES

HURDLES

A Poem by Rene Velez

We always find barriers
in contention with our freedoms,
even before we're born,
leaves us no choice but to be strong,

in debt before our first breath,
we give our best, under duress...
like feathers in a wind storm,

and the childhood dreams
ripped from the seams,
by the flaws of adult laws,
people pushed to the extreme,

and yet we leap over hurdles,
whether physical or verbal
racing with determination,
running in circles.

continuously knocked down
if you're black...or brown.
