missing the only chance given

I met him...today,
His skin as wrinkled as a bitter gourd,
Age had finally dawned on him,
Making easy tasks as picking up something hard.

I met him...today,
I can't talk with him directly,
Making the atmosphere awkward,
With only silence between us.

I met him...today,
My great grandfather,
With his right hand, missing one finger
I cannot talk to him with his language.

I met him...today,
I get the feeling,
That I should talk to him,
But embarrassment gripped me.

He left...today,
I lost the chance given,
Here I am, filled with regret
Wishing to go back in time.

you captured the essence of your sadness dear one... I felt the emotions you conveyed... yes i guess everyone does want to go back in time. But then as i percieved some past are meant to be, that some things can't be change. Just be thankful you've meet this person... regrets gets to us but can easily shove aside...for you will know that he was indeed glad he'd meet you...

Powerful. You have captured the essence of regret. Perhaps you could do a follow-on that imagines what you might have said given more time. If the regret is honest this shouldn't be too difficult. Look at the span of his life, what he endured, what he sacrificed, what he did, what he left undone. Do you recognize anything in yourself that was a part of him or his existence? Will he remain unknown?
