RHYME ROYAL
The Rhyme Royal (or Rime Royal) is a rhyming stanza form that was introduced into English poetry by Geoffrey Chaucer in the Late Middle Ages (c1000-1500 AD). The Rhyme Royal stanza consists of seven lines in iambic pentameter. The rhyme scheme is a-b-a-b-b-c-c. In practice, the stanza can be constructed either as a Tercet and two Couplets (a-b-a, b-b, c-c) or a Quatrain and a Tercet (a-b-a-b, b-c-c). This allows for variety, especially when the form is used for longer narrative poems, such as the Canterbury Tales. Along with the couplet, it became the standard narrative metre (or meter) in the Late Middle Ages.

Like always the imagery you present is so clear in my mind. I too take great delight in love found on a starlit night. The holding and loving one close, close enough to feel their warmth, to feel their heart beat. I love the "math" where one plus one is ONE!

I am not familiar with all the intricacies of writing. I shudder to tell you that I failed freshman English while in college.

Beautiful. (I need to find a new adjective, I use this one a lot.)

Not all love poems interest me, but I like this one.

I think I've done this form, I'll have to try and find it.

Beautiful, romantic, heartfelt words that paint a gentle picture in the reader's mind. Normally I'm reserved about poetry with glowing messages of love (not realistic to me) . . . but becuz the overall scenario is vividly shown, this enhances the experience greatly.

I adore this poem! Apart from the amazing usage of Rime Royal, the vibrant nature in the poem! The Image is so rich similar to the love described in the poem! It's like constellations came forth and merged with their emotions, I love it! thank you for an amazing poetry, and of course for the lesson! It's just splendid!

A lovely piece; I love the scene you've pained of a starlit night down by the pond - personally, I imagine the water calm and lit by a silvery glow (your writing really brings the readers own imagination into the picture). As well as praising the poem, I would also like to thank you for showing me another form of poetry (the Rhyme Royal) and adding the word "spake" to my vocabulary.

'.. Twas in that moment, shined the brightest light - into my heart - and love was ours that night.'

Your selected picture is absolutely beautiful, thus, draws the reviewer to read the words beneath it. And, your words are as beautiful. This is such a fine use of the Rime Royal.. an old and most elegant structure/style that is - as far as I know, rarely used these days. We can learn so much from the past. As to the Canterbury Tales, am English!!

Hi, Em* : )
How wonderful of you to visit this lover's dream, rendered in Rime Royal form.read more
A very loveable rhyme royal! This is the first time I've come across "one 'n whole", but thinking about it I realize that it has the same meaning as "one 'n all" . Weather permitting, I'm out under the stars nightly, the one (me) bonding with all the stars, the whole night sky (the whole universe). Before writing my rhyme royal, I read one by Shakespeare; this evening, by contrast, I read W.H .Auden's Letter to Lord Byron, a lengthy but entertaining and comic string of rhyme royals. Thanks for the extra information on this poetic form. It's been a long time since I read the Cantebury Tales; I shall have to revisit.
