Old Tree

Old Tree

A Poem by Rikkevi Rue
"

The sentiments of a tree-hugger.

"
Old tree, you gnarl
tired bows low complaint
wearied arms lifted
you heavenward entreat
companionable behavior from
a lifelong sun worshipper.

So thaw the winter's rime
adorn with mantle, leaves
felicity envelop your
wise drawn craggy face
lit by life from within
peers questioningly out
at agitated men whose deeds
and lifetimes narrow, span
just a portion of your journey.

Earth Mother's heady wine
knowledge beyond their ken
her wisdom they shan't drink
from deep inside her womb
for they can never root
green acorns not to sprout
lost, teeter on the brink
oblivious to their doom.

Of Nature's delicate balance
shall never 'gain discern
omniscience' graceful touch diminish
that rigid future carved
as lonely genus dwell
with every bow they fell
lumberjack-vain tendencies
will seal the tomb.

'.. her wisdom they shan't drink -- from deep inside her womb -- for they can never root -- green acorns.'

How true your words and how true their poetic convictions. Seems Man spends more time looking in shop windows than at the forest's minsicule wonders where nations of beasties live beneath the old tree's bark, protect and fed by it. I could pick and pick different parts of your thoughts but will only say that this poem means more than a few letters.. and, consequently should be read.

'.. with every bow they fell - lumberjack-vain tendencies -. will seal the tomb. ' What a tragedy.

This has a classic Shakespearean flavour in a modern poem and it fills the reader with images of nature and her longevity, her beauty despite the ravishes of time. Lovely piece indeed.

I personally LOVE your sentimentality with the forces of nature. This poem brings to life so many images that I could read it again and again and see something new each time. I myself am a Tree Hunger from days of yore. Balance in all things especially in nature would serve us well. I have read recently that trees have a heart and they actually can talk to each other. I loves trees!!

an ode to those wonderfully steadfast and bountiful creations we often neglect to appreciate. Consciousness makes us progressively more vulnerable to the ravages of time, as you well recognise here. Thank you for sharing this meaningful write.
