The Skin I'm In

The Skin I'm In

A Poem by Rita L. Sev

The skin I'm in
is what you see
this outer shell
is not all of me

So quick to judge
by what's on display
sure you know me
without hearing my say

Before, I would show
only what was expected
Certain my me-ness
would leave me rejected

Now older and wiser
I reveal yang and yin
finally at peace
with the skin I'm in

I'm loving the poetic license you took here, nothing else would have worked quite as nice. It's so true, it takes time to be comfortable in our own 'skin' and let our true selves all hang out....by the time we get it all figured out, it starts falling apart. Haha, not you, you're still a youngster. I really like this one Rita...good message.

And we love the you under that skin!! Its sad that people label us after all human beings aren't one dimensional. We are layered...just some of us more then others!! Great write Rita.

Thank you very much, Tom! :) Your kind words made me smile.
Beautiful and wise. A book and its cover so to speak. We are so much more than we appear to be and we should embrace it all as you have done in your poem.

Yes, we should embrace it all - thank you so much, Blue!
Learning to love yourself is the greatest love of all - and acceptance of one's self is a form of love along those lines Rita. This reveals more than the sum of its parts.

Thanks, Anto - for the kind words and putting that song into my head... :)
Good way of looking at yourself and the world, Rita. Balance is everything and if you're comfortable in your own skin, then you've got it all together. Well done!

Thank you, Pete :)
First two stanza express the judgment (of a book by its cover). The last two stanzas are nicely balanced. Clever and confident voice. Well done.
