Poeticus Interruptus

Poeticus Interruptus

A Poem by Rita L. Sev
"

I have long held the opinion that the amount of noise that anyone can bear undisturbed stands in inverse proportion to his mental capacity... - Arthur Schopenhauer

"

I’m writing a wonderful poem,

by publishers, sure to be sought

it’s deep, and fraught with great meaning ~

WOOF!

The dog interrupted my thought…

OK, so back to my poem ~

it’s bound to be high in its score

the flow of it will be just perfect, and ~

BANG!

There’s a knock at my door…

Where was I? Oh yes, my grand poem,

I can already hear critics singing;

I’ll tell you the title, you’ll love it ~

BRRRIINNG!

What now? My cell phone is ringing!

This poem will never get written!

A shame ~ it was to be great.

I don’t know what’s the problem ~

I just can’t concentrate!

Great use of poetry to express a subject all writers live and great title! Good rhythm and rhyme.

Thanks, Barbara! I recall being really frustrated that day. This one is fun to read to my students.. read more
Wow, I know exactly what you're talking about, Rita! Very accurate depiction...and I also can relate to the feeling of "writing a wonderful poem/by publishers, sure to be sought."

You can have the utmost confidence when you start, but the interruptions seem to ruin everything! Oh, and although I'm sometimes critical of rhyming poetry (when the rhymes just don't seem to work), I think you've really nailed it here! The rhymes really add to the humor and lighthearted feel of the poem.

Great work!

An extraordinarily accurate view of writer troubles. We all go through these daily trials of no peace and quiet to hone our inspiration.

That darn life always getting in the way... for me it is often long work hours that hurt my creativity... I love the fun tongue in cheek way you expressed what many of us writers feel.

Yes, Life is one wonderful, noisy, distracting gift! ;) Thanks, Dale!
Wow, this is another one that I can sympathize with wholeheartedly...I need complete silence to write...there can be no music, no TV, not even a boiling kettle...I guess it speaks more to my flimsy concentration than anything...there is no number high enough to reflect the number of times this poem runs through my head in the course of a day haha...having said all that, I know I'm not the only writer who can make that claim...you speak for many of us with this piece my friend ;)

Haha well the quality of your writing certainly hasn't suffered ;)
Delightful....I can absolutely relate. Sometimes a poem is just DYING to be written and the phone or the TV or a knock at the door steals it right out of my psyche! The rhyming made this poem flow easily. Good work, Rita. Lydi**

Thank you, Rain - so glad you enjoyed this!
I call it your meta-poem--writing about writing a poem. Well captured stream of consciousness.

This one sounds just like my poetry sessions, Rita. Way too short and always interrupted by trivial pursuits such as work and sleep. If I could just write poetry, how happy I would be! You have brought me some much needed comic relief this afternoon, Rita. Thank you for this very funny poem.
