Mortal Lament

Mortal Lament

A Poem by Rowen Cameron
"

A person is many things, a die with many sides. But when love comes and goes, who do they become?

"

I am the oracle, all-seeing and wise.
Past, present, future can be seen in my eyes.
But if I am she who sees all that occurred,
How did I miss you? My vision was blurred.

I am the cat, ever-cunning and swift,
Sparing no thought making use of my gift.
But though my senses were keen and acute,
You caught me off-guard. I was fixed on my route.

I am the heroine, courageous and bold,
With the fury of combat and armour of gold.
Though my sword was deadly and vast was my shield,
You shattered them both. I will never yield.

I am the fortress, well-guarded and great.
To the few I let enter, deep secrets await.
Despite all my walls and traps of my might,
You slipped in unseen. I must be docile at night.

I am Aphrodite, love goddess elite.
I play stepping stones with the men at my feet.
But if my charms bring a man to the floor,
Why not you, why not you? Damn el amor!

I am the mortal, fragile and weak.

A personal heaven is the manna I seek.
I know I reside in the mortal abyss
For a goddess’ heart cannot break like this.
