A Family of Friends

A Family of Friends

A Poem by Sarah

She moved into a place that she didn't know,
and was a foreigner to every local

She was a from a big city

And didn’t feel like she fit in

With the country folks

At first, she kept to herself

It wasn't easy for her to find common ground,
but now she has friends in the new town

They went from being perfect strangers
to sharing daily chores and party favors
They don't share any biological stems,
but they made a family of friends

Her classes were filled with books and coffee cups
but her roommate hadn't really grown up

Homework and finals consumed her time

But drinking and partying weren’t her style
It's wasn’t easy being the newcomer,
but as she made friends, they played in the summer

They went from being perfect strangers
to sharing daily chores and party favors
They don't share any biological stems,
but they made a family of friends

Her first day called for making a good impression
then she had ninety days to pass probation

She settled in dressing up her cubicle

With a family photo and a calendar

She shared a little bio with her co-workers
and pretty soon she was telling jokes with no borders

This is lovely, like you've written a universal truth ; ) and effortlessly lyrical.
At some stage in our lives I think we find ourselves at this very place, I have been this person a number of times and will no doubt find myself there again soon, its what makes life rich and builds character...what we don't realize is that we add richness to others lives too. I like this very much. Starz x

A nice story in the poetry with a positive ending.
"She shared a little bio with her co-workers
and pretty soon she was telling jokes with no borders"
I like the above lines. Good when people can gather and find common ground. Thank you Sarah for sharing the excellent poetry.

I have moved around so many times, my whole life every 3 years until I finally settled in one place about 20 years ago. Even then, I moved within this large town too, and I always made a family of friends. It was always kind of terrifying to go to a new spot, wondering if they'll like me and if I'll make friends, if I'll fit in, whether it's a new house or job. But pretty soon, "telling jokes with no borders". Very nice idea and very relatable
