Imaginary Lovers

A Poem by Sally Hope
"

KEEP CALM and LOVE WHO YOU WANT.

IMAGINARY LOVERS

Look out your window - I’ll be standing right there.

I’ll drink the raindrops so the sun shines ‘pon your day.

You will wear the white shirt that you bought one foggy Monday.

I will wear the black belt that you slip out of my waist.

Look out your dorm-room - I’ll be standing right there.

I’ll try to flash a smile, but all that comes out is a breath.

You will know what I see and what I wished to say.

I wait for you to speak, but all you do is pull me in.

Look o’er the herd’s heads - I’ll be standing right there.

I’ll wave at you, but all you’ll do is turn your eyes away.

You will smile when no one’s watching, you will gaze askance.

Our fingers graze; the herd appears; you pull your hand away.

Look out through your fingers - I’m standing right there.

I will make my way to you, but you will shake your head.

I will stop, for I don’t want for you to feel ashamed.

I don’t expect you to call, but your eyes should speak my name.

Look out your window - I will be right by your side.

The car will fly past the highway; I’ll be your shotgun ride.

You will take my hand then, you will flash that smile.

There will be no hide-and-seek, no fear in your eyes.

Look out your dorm-room - I’ll be standing right there.

The couch looks warm from where I stand; a girl sits on your bed.

You know what I see and everything I wished to say.

I don’t wait for you to speak; I simply walk away.

Look out your window - I don’t stand there, anymore.

I don’t drink the raindrops, so it rains from dusk to dawn.

You walk with her by your side; the herd keeps you at shore.

I keep playing the song on repeat: “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”.

I like the repeating line, “Looking out...” The poem has a story quality about it which makes it almost epic. It tells a story, albeit a sad one. The lines “I'll drink the raindrops” were effective and carried the devotion of the speaker to the end of the poem. Unrequited love sucks.

Good work. By the way, listen to the Walker Brothers version of the song. It's the one I remember from the radio.

This was great. I like how you used the recurring theme of standing outside the window to lead up to that final sad moment at the end.
