Animal

Animal

A Poem by Sarah W. French
"

...

"
One blink and I'm a monster
with golden eyes.
In one breath I'm ready
to pounce and kill.
And be assured my claws
are razor sharp.
My mind is still human
but my body is different.
One wrong word
and I'm ready for war.
My body morphs
to my true form.
A body of gray fur
and pointed teeth.
One blink and I'm a beast
with blood on my hands.
I've been kicked and beaten
and I've formed a defense.
I may be smaller but
I have power.
My arms whip around me
looking for a target.
My claws sink into
the flesh of my pray.
And as they take their
last breath and I turn back.
When in my human state
i morn for my soul.
But each day I blink
and become an Animal again

This is beautiful in both a straight forward sense as well as a metaphorical sense. I can see the animal reference, which might be very popular among todays youth with 'transforming' into animals and all that. The animal sense paints a story and allows the reader to imagine what they want out of the entire thing. The background behind the subject, as well as their friends etc. But the metaphorical sense allows readers to familiarize with it, it allows them to put pieces of the poem into their own memories or their life, allows them to relate.

I really enjoyed this.
