The Path We Follow

The Path We Follow

A Poem by Scott Thomas

The moon burns with intimate red
No spotlight to guide us
We must follow the sea to bed
For only at night hope finds us

It casts a somber hue above
The ripe apple we all reach for
And as we sing our songs of love
We will look back on this burden we bore

If daylight finds us, we sacrifice life
We must be critical of every step
The apple drops further, soon overripe
In light we become dark, fleeting on a ship

The gourd above is our path to freedom
Use it to bathe and drink with
Do not speak of it to any kingdom
Our lives start with a single sip
