A Carving of Hearts

A Carving of Hearts

A Poem by TerryDarcy-Ryan akaSheerTerror

I can not give away

the image

engraved in my vision
as I stood beside giants

while hidden
mighty titans

that is how I see

the trees that hid me
in their shadows

like a villain

thrown together in
 circumstance

looked high into the sky

had to cover my eyes
extending a hand in an introduction
the gesture sat unmoved

almost unworthy
the trees remain silent and solemn

absurd as it would be

if a Tree could answer me
as a friend to attend a function
crazy as it seems

the perfect witness is a tree
the well kept secret

 an alliance unspoken

a maze of roots wrapped around, winding about the soil,
turning, urging to follow, to my feet, to a connection

in the privacy of the trees

I saw you hiding from me

or was it a dream

it brought me here

just to see you my dear

carving the heart of another

on our tree

the tree trunk held a carving

 the smallest of hearts
amber in color like old blood

no longer red
I found you there

like all the tears

that do not fall
instead I am drowning in my head

the knife came from your pocket

as you were kissing me
far into a place unexpected
 precision placed forever

our letters in the center
of the tree

of the heart

of regrets

pride, escorted me

along the path

to the trees, to the heart, to you

to the sharpest of knives

 I keep in your chest

time simply slipped away

no forward, no back, no simply

left me in trespass

my titan trees

they did not protest

the screams
the blood

 warm as it still runs

twisting and veering

along their roots

freely moving

from you to me at last

I really like this one, vibrant imagery that reminds one of the pre surrealist symbolists. but with a romantic twist (in imagery at least) of the High Romantics.

You have a keen sense at reading my mind through my lines. Thank you for the review
Sheer, this reminds me of the poem 'Trees' by Kilmer. a great metaphor for affairs of the heart. the act of carving a heart being an oldie but a goodie, classic.
remarkable things those trees - so many parallels with our lives. thinking of mighty oaks, redwoods, sequoias, and on & on. lovely words and imagery as always. this leaves its mark upon the reader's heart as does the carving in the tree.
