Unexpected & Unbelievable

Unexpected & Unbelievable

A Poem by Shelby Baker
"

How things can change in your life and change how you see things

"
To handle unexpected gifts
Is always unbelievable
To handle unexpected horrors
Is always unbelievable

To learn that you're three months pregnant
Is a freighting and unexpected gift
Knowing that theirs a gift on its way

That you’ll be raising a child fatherless
That shall  grow like a flower In a garden
Need to be feed and taken cared of
cherished and loved

You’ll fear the worse
But you’ll get control back
And live your life
In new  eyes

To learn that you caught a STD
While having a one night stand
Is totally unexpected and unbelievable
You'll wonder why this happened to you
You’ll fear the worse
But you’ll get control back
And live your life

In new  eyes
Both terrifying and unexpected
Things in your life
Shall always turn your life
Into something better
As you travel down that path..

The way you play on the word "unbelievable" is amazing. It's one of those words which we often associate with contrasting scenarios without noticing the pun. The ray of hope at the end raises the piece to a whole new level, though. Thanks for sharing.

No, but so many get caught up & end up....
just as this poem reads.

Sad, yes, especially because they are getting
younger and younger.

It seems like life is all about unexpected things happening. If I were to show my current state of affairs to a 20y/0 me, he'd be shocked and probably horrified! You may not be pregnant or suffering from an STD, but you obviously recognize how quickly our existence can change and turn us on our heads. Great poem! I related to it on so many levels.

Indeed, unexpected things can happen to an individual. Whether it makes sense or not is up to that person, but being bias, they wonder why. In my opinion, it's a test. Things are meant to be and no-one can change that. The only independent variable is how that person chooses to deal with it; making the best of the situation or letting their life go to crap. There will always be a fork in the road, and you'll have to decide which path to take...the easiest may not always be the best.

Very real. A lot of stuff on here is utter garbage and I can tell you put something of yourself into this. Again the image along with the poem only amplifies the strength of the piece.

I like it! I especially like the volta in stanza #2, because it just whips the tone around at breakneck speed, makes it all grave. I like that the unexpected events get exponentially darker, but the conclusion is still hopeful; this could've been very gloomy if it hadn't! SP & grammar side of things, the 'your pregnant = you're pregnant,' 'theirs a = there's a', but that's it. [I'm wondering, is 'freighting' a deliberate choice, like, in the sense of a weight you carry round with you??]
