Light's Stairs, Light Stares

Light's Stairs, Light Stares

A Poem by Jasmine S. Edwards

Wearing the age of strife long forgotten

Blood stained by the falsehood of right and wrong

Light’s stairs are no longer in use

Light stares at the final obstacle to his destination.

Factory machines dressed in cobwebs and dirt

A man with polished hair and clothes tries to find comfort

Light’s stairs are wet with tears

Light stares at the place where he can rest.

Life in danger, no insurance, no rights, no power

Cellphone dead, no service, no charger, no power

Men exchanging hard hats and uniforms for suits and ties

Light’s stairs have faint boot prints outlined in dust

Light stares at the footprints in which he covers with shoeprints

Cold January breeze slips through cracks and cuts

The heart is weakened as walls close in

Light’s stairs lay the foundation for his deathbed

Light stares at the dreams he has planned

Abandoned and all alone

Fixated in one spot

Light’s stairs bolted to the ground unable to leave

Light stares at the ceiling above looking to the future

Both are comrades in the same fight

Both stood up for justice in the only way they knew how

Light’s stairs illuminated from shadow

Light stares at an illusion of an apparition

The future where neither belong

The past where hard-work changed all

Both fade into history and mystery

Light’s stairs work hard to stand

Light’s stares hardly stood a chance
