Just look at her.

Here was this child, giggling and reaching for my hand mere hours after her birth. Could any infant convert to such happiness so soon?

She dared to challenge my intellect.  Green eyes that were swimming with curiosity and a smile that was mischievously playful.

He used to smile like that. But His smile was long gone.

Thanks for reviewing!
Beautiful beginning to what I'm sure will be an emotional story. I like it. To see a face so new, so full of life, and so serene with so many possibilities and so many hopes and dreams, a fresh beginning.

the contrast is at once heart warming and tragic ... the resolve is so strong ...its sad that your protagonist may never let another "He" in again ;(
i like the images the brevity and the depth of feelings that go with maternal "en face"
