Carnival of My Conscience

Carnival of My Conscience

A Poem by Merle Van Dee

Conundrums swirl in my mind
Like one twirls a fine wine
Or the passage of time
   Mythical concoctions
Of rhyme and reason
   Paint symphonies of unanswered questions
About my heart's deepest desires
Leaving holes in the carcass of my soul.

Saints and sinners play
In this carnival of my conscience.
Pointing out cardinal sins
While I indulge in carnal ones.
Mary-goes-round
   And I play Russian-roulette with a clown
Whilst having a lover's affair
   With the acrobats of mid-air.

But then I wake,
Or at least think I do
And it all seems but a dream
Formed in the hours between night and day
When my heart is at its weakest.
   My carnival of conundrums
Is lost to the recesses of my mind once again
   Only to return
When my demon wants to play.
