If Only

If Only

A Poem by Sjay

IF ONLY

By: Sjay

“There is so much in this world other than just love”

“Love is not life”

I disagree. We were created out of love and love is all that we breathe

Love is not the fairytales that we read.

Love is not an emotion; it is a code of life.

If we loved all mankind, there wouldn’t be anyone knocking on our doorstep for help

If we loved all the old ones, there wouldn’t be any old age homes for them to rot in

If we loved our women, there wouldn’t be any women’s’ rights conventions and pink shirts

If we loved the children, every kid in a third world country would’ve been able to read this text

If we loved all creatures, animals wouldn’t keep vanishing from the face of this planet

If we loved our forests we wouldn’t be crying over global warming.

If only we were a little less selfish and not as ignorant as we are.

If only we could see beyond diamond rings and wedding gowns

If only their pain was ours, kids in Africa wouldn’t be dying of hunger

Women in India wouldn’t be getting raped every 20 minutes

If only we could see beyond the fence of our own house,

We would feel the agony of the hundreds dying in Gaza

We would stand up against Taliban killing the innocent in Pakistan

If only we cared

IF ONLY WE WERE IN LOVE

Very well said my friend. If only we as a whole could find the compassion deep within our souls. If only we could tear ourselves away from our celebrity gossip and reality TV shows and look at what REAL reality is. I think everyone should read and write a piece like this. Maybe then after we pounded it into our minds like the violence and hate we see every day on the movies screens we would begin to understand and love a little more. Keep up the good work, I love your style of writing. Very matter of fact and informative.

Sjay--I love what you are saying here! It has the ring of genuine caring and hope... and, of course love... I do agree with Chris about the repetition of initial words. It's distracting from the important things you have to say. Generally it is best to use as few words as we can and still get out meaning across.

I would also separate the first two lines from the body of the poem. Another person seems to be talking and it is a bit confusing to have to stop and think about whether this is true. A simple space might work wonders. Overall, though, I get a good feeling about this poem. Very nice work!
