A Poem by Cole Hayley

"very little time"

i might have a terrible sense of time

but i always know how minuscule my time is

this isn’t necessary useless

it has its benefits

like knowing the sun sets,

now that’s convenient

how long until the shops close?

how long until my coffee gets cold?

this is the kind of stuff i know

when the tube stops and

the bridge opens up

when london sleeps on top

of people struggling to do

the same

how short 21 actually is

(no university degree

no job in showbiz)

two days left and i can’t tell

if i love or hate this city

i still don’t know how long we will last

we've lasted longer than all my expectations

and you will always be pretty

i think i’ll see 80

the girl, eager to go home,

turns off the music, turns

off the light over the cash,

and silently tells us to go

Author's Note

Cole Hayley
this one was a while coming. i spent a long time writing nothing at all, then, the times i did write something, it wasn't very good. i settled eventually on "huit / poetry café doomsday" being the closer to this series (i couldn't even decide on a single name). there is, however, an alternative closer on my blog page (http://www.writerscafe.org/Skies/blogs/8.1/121281/).

i always imagined the closer of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 being a sprawling epic, released a week after the last poem. neither of these things happend but i'm really happy with the simplicity of "huit / poetry café", i wrote it in 10 minutes at the poetry café in london (figures). i think it really caps off what this series was meant to be, words too urgent to be said.

thanks to everyone who read along with the 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 series and managed to not become annoyed with my secretively and my prolonged absence. another series is in the work, but until then i'll be posting / reviewing regularly once again. i have a lot of unpublished poems from the last year, the first one being "zachary talked about the moon", which will be released tomorrow or the next day.

thank you all.
