Lesson from a street sweeper

Lesson from a street sweeper

A Poem by SleeplessVolcano

Void of artists and intellectuals
I stumble down my darkened alley way
The sun supposedly fighting to rise
But it has an attitude problem today
I find Ibrahim from Bangladesh
Sweeping the streets with a smile
Scooping up sandy dust
The desert will blow there again tomorrow
But that does not bother him at all
He says he smiles with pride
Knowing that if his hands remain faithful
With his broom
It may just change the luck for his son
And give him one day a scalpel to wield
In this war of earthly survival
And somehow I feel positively lectured
In this void of artist and intellectuals
I stumbled upon a hardworking Michelangelo
Faithfully practising his wise craft
To benefit the next generation
And suddenly I feel so small compared
To my new friend's wisdom.

Somehow we all can learn so much
i guess just examining a different life than our vary own
it can be a true moment of great wisdom

Certainly can learn the most valuable lessons in the most unexpected of places, from the most unassuming people. I like the way you built this up into the realisation that nothing is ever what it seems. It also reminds me of someone. Alan Richardson, who is a road sweeper in Glasgow, Scotland, and an amazing artist. He once told me that it is the day job that gives him his inspiration for his hobby. He could charge a lot more than he does for his works, but is too good a person to rob customers. I see where he is coming from and see why he s the way he is. Thank you for reminding me there are still surprising people out there.
