Another bullet steals our peace

Another bullet steals our peace

A Poem by SleeplessVolcano

Pierce, they did
our flesh, our soul
but more than that,
our peace, they stole.

Smooth sounds of joy
plunged into hell
when one by one
our bodies fell.

Our wounds bleed more
than mere red blood
could we have stopped,
this repeating rut?

An irony -
how sad it is,
the now-drained swamp
still steals our peace.

I grew up in the sixties and seventies. We had crazy people then too. The SLA...the IRA...bombers. In 1960 a subway bomber injured 52. Between 1969 and 1970 there were an unprecedented 8200 attempted bombings and bomb threats in college campuses alone! In 1977 a Muslim group held three D.C. buildings and 149 hostages for three days. My point is, this is nothing new and it will continue as long as social and civil unrest is a part of human culture. Basically, there's nothing we can do but avoid "soft target" gatherings and be aware of our surroundings. This particular fellow had access to some very unusual firepower and probably not licensed or legal. I say this because from the footage I've listened to it sounds like the reports are from an M-16 or M-60 military weapon on full auto. These are illegal to civilians. But if he had not access to these military arms, no doubt he would have found a way to cause harm. But I think the results of that harm would have been far more limited. It's sad that we have crazy people in this world who indiscriminately murder their fellow human beings. Sad that we have war. Two bombs in Japan in WWII killed over 250,000 people, men women and children. But we do have crazy people among us and we do have war. We had it then and we still have it. It's not going away because the problem in not in weapons or their availability. The problem is with human hearts and minds.
