Monkeys In the Zoo

Monkeys In the Zoo

A Poem by Andromeda
"

thanks for the idea, lauren!

"

As a child,

Alexander loved to go to the zoo.

He loved the reptile house,

Which made his sister’s arms crawl.

He loved the giraffes,

Which he thought were goofy

With their long blue tongues.

Most of all, though,

He loved the monkeys,

Which chattered on and on in their cages—

Like his mother gossiping on the phone—

Which pounded their chests and

Bared their tiny white teeth when they were angry—

Like the bullies at school.

Alexander loved the way

The monkeys

Watched him

And

Tilted their heads at him—

As though they

            Knew

What it was like

To be a children

Watching monkeys in the zoo.
