While You Were Sleeping

While You Were Sleeping

A Poem by Nightshade

It’s a hard decision in life -

To choose to be happy, not alone, but still with a broken heart

Or to be utterly lonely, but with a hurting heart -

However letting no one destroy it.

As I quietly watch you sleeping peacefully next to me,

I think about a question you asked in the past.

You asked me if I had fallen for you, and I lied -

My answer was no.

A tear falls down my cheek, falling into the empty space I put between us.

You grimace slightly in your sleep, almost like it pains you to see me cry -

Even asleep - although both of us knows this not to be true.

I promised you that I would never fall for you,

Although I had already broken that promise before making it.

And, if I told you the truth - of how precious you are to me -

Then I would lose you… forever.

So, I’ll tell you what I have done - apologizing all the way.

Right here, right now - I tell you I have fallen for you -

Only you… but I only tell you while you were sleeping.

Only… you are actually awake,

Hearing every word.

We all have our secrets.

Now I’m the fool.
