Dickie Sparrow visits the Queen

Dickie Sparrow visits the Queen

A Poem by Stella Armour
"

Continuing with Dickie and another adventure..

"

Dickie Sparrow had an invitation,

a letter from the Queen

he was to go to a garden party

and his feathers he had to preen.

Well Mrs Sparrow wasn’t happy

but she had to let him go,

a royal invitation

could not be answered with a “No.”

Off he flew our little friend

up and away at the crack of dawn

soon he would be having a picnic

at Buckingham Palace on the lawn.

He watched the posh and famous

as they all arrived for tea

but Queen Elizabeth wasn’t there

oh dear where could she be?

Then Dickie espied her

sitting on her throne,

Magpie had been and stolen

her favourite diamond stone.

“Not to worry my Lady. “

said Dickie with a smile,

“I’ll go and fetch Jim Cuckoo

and catch Magpie in a while.

And so Dickie missed the party

but he retrieved the precious gem,

the Queen bestowed a knighthood

then Magpie she did condemn.

“Imprison him in the Tower!”

she told the guards with glee,

“Dickie Sparrow and Jim Cuckoo

please come and dine with me.”

Mrs Sparrow was furious

when she had to call Dickie “Sir”

but the Queen sent a special gift

an emerald studded feather, just for her.

Sir Dickie - what more could be said - I suppose he was escorted to the throne room by Redcoats (or perhaps they were Robins) You'll be writing by appointment next ... :-)
