Love Destroyed

Love Destroyed

A Poem by Nely Amorim
"

it's loosely based on my siblings...

"

Shouting, cursing, words too harsh to bear

I close my eyes and say a prayer

Feeling small, tears of fear and sadness

I hear my hero, fight the madness

No excuses, none will suffice

He bullies children from twice his height

Standing small yet defiant still

He dashes away the tears that spill

So much anger, unjust too

But what can a 10 year old boy do?

Made to man up on chores and skills

He has yet to master, though he wills

Pushed to limits beyond his strength

His youthful happiness is way past spent

Further humiliation does ensue

Pure hatred sears his heart, it's true

A boy without defences, fights the pain

Sleepless wanderings to hide his shame

Frustration, anger makes a man

Not fit to right a wrong or make a stand

Some days the memories spill into life

His own discipline on his children causing strife

He won't be his father! He shouts in fear

If only his heart and mind would hear...

Ah, this is sad. You can't put an adult's head on a kid's body. kids need to be kids. One line really bugs me though as these type of phrases are a thing I HATE in poetry. This line, "Futher humiliation does ensue", that "does" has no business in there. Would you say, in a conversation for example, my head does hurt or simply, my head hurts? True, you might say, my head does hurt, but only if someone said, Your head doesn't hurt first. It is a rebuttal. I think that could use editing out for a better word choice for this great piece.

Melanie, there is an incredible ammount of depth to this writing, and the messege being reflected,
expressing the details of a childhood being abused, draws upon the hearts moral obligation to see

what's happening to those who can't defend themselves isnt right and the negative action toward
the innocence should be put to an immediate stop, its hard to ponder what drives some indivisuals

to act like monsters, especially if its family, this poem is heartfully sad, you did an excellent job.

Amazing poetry, Stormzzz. It takes a lot to open up this way and write about something so emotionally powerful and negative. Getting it out helps make sense of things and takes away the power it has in the shadows. :)

His own discipline on his children causing strife
He won't be his father! He shouts in fear
If only his heart and mind would hear...

You know, I think this is exactly why my brother never had children...I think he was afraid to.

And I think I did to prove I could conquer the demons, which I did most definitely, raising my daughter with everything I never had...love, promise, hope, dreams, security, confidence, rationality, strength, and she is living proof that we can prevail, that we don't have to repeat the horror, that we can kill the monsters that live in the shadows of our memories.

Great job, Mel.
