Inner Temple - Samhuinn

Inner Temple - Samhuinn

A Poem by Ani Ashford
"

Love reaches into the depths of our soul and hearts. In Greek Mythology, Persephone was spirited away to the Underworld - bringing her light to the darkness of that Underworld even for a few months.

"

I step into the Underworld of your soul.

 "Unlock me," I said.

You have the key.

What does it take to soar

to the infinite interior of who I am?

Now is the time of the Underworld;

The deepest part of my inner cave.

Persephone shone her light

within the hollows of Hades realms.

So then do I carry my flame high,

stepping over the threshold guarded by Cerberus.

Do not forget the coin,

tendered to the Ferryman.

Oh Chiron, what do you see?

Stepping over the threshold,

to the Underworld of my soul;

Is there life in the seeds of garnet red?

Pomegranate speak your spells.

Sweet and glowing in the honeycombed shell

surrounding it with leathery skin.

Break it.

Jewel by jewel

taste the bitter sweetness I offer.

Shall I return to Spring?

Perhaps.

I have brought my flame

to this Inner Temple.

Life is yet to come.

"Unlock me," I said.

You have the key.

What does it take to soar

to the infinite interior of who I am?

Courage and Choice.

We have the key.

Beautiful. Simply Beautiful. I know little about mythology, knowing what I know mainly by reading The Odysey, Iliad, & Divine Comedy. It interest's me greatly. What I pictured in this poem was Persephone in an orb of only her light surrounded by utter darkness speaking to herself clasping a sole pomegranate which gives off it's own faint red glow. The colors in themselves gave the poem a beauty I truly love. It was quite intriguing.

The metaphores blend together, here. They create a ballad of mythical love. It is a classic.

Beautiful! Yes persephone's journey into the underworld is fraught with perils but, as you so beautifully put it, the jewels with which she is rewarded are worth the journey into her darkness. I wish more people made this journey! The world might be a very different place!
