Giving Back

Giving Back

A Poem by Sylvia Ransom
"

I was inspired by a song called Are You An Angel by The Springs... I am usually not one for country, but their music has truely spoken to me.

"

Giving Back

One day I was standing in line,

Waiting to board the plane home,

When this man behind me seemed to have a lot on his mind,

I turned around to see him smiling at me,

He bowed his head and said Miss,

This is an awful long wait,

I have a story and I'm willing to tell it,

It's about my daughter and me,

Back when she was three,

Would you be interested to hear it?

I nodded my head saying,

Yes sir,

I can never pass up a story,

From a country man like you,

He cracked a smile and laughed,

Then he said...

She was three and meant everything to me,

She had the sweetest smile on this side of the mississippi,

She had a genuine heart just like her mothers,

It showed through one Christmas,

While the children all cried for this and that,

She wasn't like the rest,

Instead she said,

(chorus 1) How about this coat for pete down the street?

How about this doll for Kate, I don't care if my Christmas gifts have to wait?

How about this toy car for Jimmy,

Do you think he'll smile?

Can we help the family down the street,

On Christmas they shouldn't have to worry about having nothing to eat?

She'd look up at me and smile,

How my heart sank everytime she asked,

She gave up so much just to give the others a chance to smile and laugh,

She was a sweet kid.

At the end of his story,

My eyes filled with tears,

How much she gave up at only three years,

If only we took a lesson from her,

Maybe we'd live in a better world.

It's two years later,

And my son's growing fast,

He's about four and he's the pick of the pack,

He is completely happy with the clothes on his back,

And on Christmas,

He loves to have a chance to give back.

(Chorus 2) Can we get this teddy for emily,

Or this blanket for molly?

Can we get this sweater for jeremy,

Or this necklace for Aly?

Will this cake make the Johnsons smile?

Will these groceries last them a while?

Mommy, it feels nice to give back.

He makes me feel hopeful for the rest of the world,

If at such an early age he can love to help,

Think about how life will be for the rest of the population,

Will they finally have found their salvation?

If these little kids can give back,

Will it lead to a brighter future?

The words are very good. Nothing better then a poem/music to make you feel good and sad at the same time. The flow and words were very good. A outstanding poem. Thank you.
