His Passing

His Passing

A Poem by C.T. Bailey
"

A collection of emotions stemming from the death of my father....

"

This has really caught me by surprise;
Truly I never expected this feeling to arise;
Although I have been lonely most of my life;
Emptiness is the edge on the loneliness knife.

The loss of my father has broken heart;
I see the emptiness his loss did impart;
Gone for almost two years to this day;
I am the patriarch; I am to lead the way.

Now I look into my aging mother’s eyes;
In many small ways we say our goodbyes;
I sense her dread of the hourglass of time;
God tarry long before the church bells chime.

I still keep waiting for my phone to ring;
I know that soon his voice it will bring;
Dad send me some guidance, what can I do;
I am falling apart, would you see me through?

I realize that I am completely on my own;
Good or bad, decisions are mine and mine alone;
That which I need I will never again receive;
Dad I miss you; to our memories I will always cleave.

I was just going to pen a poem about my dear old dad. I wonder if feelings like that will surface when he passes. Maybe some memories long dead. However my G'ma passed and best friend was gone. That made me question who is the go to now. And like in yours the answer was me. scary I know. I don't want the job. Brilliant introspection. I enjoy your writing.

I know that knife well. I lost a son.

It sounds to me like your relationship with your father was as close as mine with my father, though my father, I'm certain, is not a thing like yours. And I don't ask him for advice any more. He asks me. LOL.
I will miss my dad every day when he is gone, and love him for always. I saw that in your writing here, and it didn't fail to touch me. Thank you for sharing, Todd.

Death really is an unexpected thief in the night and it leaves so much grief and sadness behind. I remember you mentioning this in your review of my poem about my grandpa's death and I am also glad you have writing to help you express your grief. This poem really touches a soft spot on my heart; I can't imagine losing my dad.
This was wonderfully written, very powerful.

I like when I read a poem that I can relate to, and this is a perfect example of one of them. Your grief is evident in every line and it tugs at the heartstrings. Great write/read!
