When Crickets Sing

A disturbing silence befell the land
When recent talk of Darfur began.
The people turned and walked away,
They didn’t care what he had to say;
And he heard the crickets sing.

He said “Speak up! Don’t allow this to go on!"
“Please!” he exclaimed, “you know this is wrong!"
If we could hear their cries, would we feel their pain?
Hearing women raped and children slain?"
And he heard the crickets sing.

A stranger approached and asked him to stop,
“I don’t want to hear this, poetry it is not.
Lilies and rainbows line the verses I read,
Don’t tell me of the suffering for it is not we who bleed."
And he heard the crickets sing.

Nearly half a million dead and more will follow,
A genocide overlooked is just too hard to swallow.
The Holocaust revisited for those who choose to see,
I guess it’s a good thing it isn’t you or me;
And he heard the crickets sing.

SAVE THE PEOPLE OF DARFUR!
AS THE WORLD HAS TRULY TURNED A BLIND EYE
ON IT'S CHILDREN OF HUMANITY!
LET'S US TAKE THE BALL AND RUN WITH IT!
AS WORLD WRITERS AND CONCERNED
CITIZENS OF THIS EARTH
LET US ALLSOUND THE ALARMS AND
KEEP MAKING NOISE TILL THIS WORLD
GETS SICK OF US AND GETS UP
AND STOPS THIS TOTAL ABOMANATION
AGAINST MANKIND!
LET THE PAGES OF HISTORY WHEN IT SHOWS THE
CRIMES AGAINST THESE POOR CHILDREN OF HUMANITY
ALSO SHOW ALL OF US THAT STOOD UP TOGETHER AND DID
EVERYTHING WE COULD IN OUR POWER TO STOP IT!

Well penned. It is true Darfur does slip from the news all too easily. But Pens for Peace is doing a great job to keep it on the agenda. Few othere seem to both much, sadly.
