The Proposal

The Proposal

A Story by Talal Hussain

Finally i proposed the love of my life, not sure what future has to unfold but i am positive.

                                                                       The Proposal

Time had made me very practical and professional. But this professionalism came with a price. I had evolved into an emotionless human being spending most of my time in reading, researching and teaching. Love and affection had become meaningless terms in my life. At an age when most of my friends were involved in deep romantic relationships, I was working hard to earn respect and professional satisfaction. Becoming a doctor is a hard job and becoming a respectable and responsible doctor is even tougher.

Yet, throughout this time, there was one girl I admired. I had known her for a long time as we studied in the same medical college. She was elegant, beautiful, straight forward and above all kind hearted. I had intentionally suppressed my feelings for her as I thought I was no match for her. I was a struggler at that time and my future was very uncertain.

But now after five years things were very different. My persistence and hard work had paid off for me. I had achieved more than what I had expected. My colleagues and juniors held me in high regards. I came across a respectable, decent and hardworking individual. During the entire struggle I had gone through, I had made a name for myself. This was the ideal time for me to express my feelings.

I knew this was true love as this was a feeling I had never experienced before. I have taken a lot of tough medical knowledge exams and made numerous public speeches, never have I felt this kind of anxiety. The thought of her, makes me miss a beat. The idea that she might reject my proposal makes my heart sink. She is the only lady in this world who can melt my heart in such a way.

It took me a lot of courage to finally propose to her. The meeting was setup by a mutual friend and the venue was a local coffee shop. She looked beautiful and classy as usual. After chatting about random topics I finally spoke my heart out. She quietly listened to what I had to say but I knew she had a lot questions in her mind. I answered all her queries in detail and told her that I will support her and stick by her no matter what the circumstances may be.

She gave a positive response but she was getting too many proposals at that time. Most of the proposals were coming from random people who had seen her in a party or an event. She was after all a beautiful lady. But my case was different. She had known me for 5 years now. She had seen me struggle and progress slowly but surely. If this marriage took place it would be a big shot event. She was famous for her ever charming personality and people knew me for being a man of principles.

The ball is in her court now. She and her family have to decide what is in their best interest. All I can do for now is to wait. I don’t know what future holds for me but I do know if she says yes, I am going to be happy, very happy.

Well written, but I'd like to see some dialogue.

I'm thinking their are cultural differences here. I live in America where we date for a short time or a long time before proposals come. Sometimes we live together before getting married.

This sounds like it would indeed take a lot of courage to propose. Love the story in this piece of hard work paying off.

I am glad Talal you took the courage and expressed your feelings. I am going to sound little phony here "Girte hain shahsawar hi maidaan-e-jung mei Woh tifl kya girenge jo ghutno ke bal chale". My best wishes.

congratulations and good luck... Perhaps culture dictates, but here ... in America... what matters is what she thinks...what she feels ... who she loves...not what family decides but what she (and her suitor) truly want to be happy, prosper and be in love with each other without strings...If you both feel that... than nothing should stand in your way...Don't worry how it looks...only how it feels. Oh,and a good write as well.
