Howl of Dreams

Howl of Dreams

A Poem by Alexander Loux
"

A boy running in hope to live his dream.

"

The heavy breathing is all he can hear.
Sweat and the slight smell of berries thicken
around him like a noose.

The boy is calm as he leaves home that night.
Yet the fear slowly builds in him as he
encounters the large goose.

His heart nearly stops as the urge is shot.
Sharp as pain and quick as lightning, the boy
jumps to the large bird.

Angrily the bird fights back at the boy.
Crimson blood smears the grass, the bird, and him
until nothing is heard.

The boy awakens holding the dead goose.
Home is near, but he cannot return to
the place of his family.

Carrying his prize, he heads to the sun.
He leaves what he knows hoping for freedom,
walking down quietly.

He hopes that the others will accept him.
They should, for they are wolves in the dark night,
and he is of their blood.

He is a dog, following his heart’s dream.
Wishing he was a wolf, house life felt wrong
when he was not in mud.

The boy leaves quietly, instinct his fuel.
Sitting down, he arches back and howls a
calling song for his kin.

The others howl back and soon they appear.
The boy sits quiet as they inspect him,
until he sees a grin.

The others howl, and soon they are all gone.
This time the boy is with all of the wolves,
the packs newest member.

His dream has come true.

This was written for a contest. The first stanza was written by her, and I had to add onto it.
