The Kaiser and the Queen

The Kaiser and the Queen

A Poem by Mike Sieger

At chess the powers of Europa played,
at the board, for years, did fam'ly stay.
Down at the novice side sat the Kaiser,
Down at the white side sat the gracious Queen.
They were to spill cold blood for stony greed,
for the Kaiser had long been a trampl'd seed.
The board, was speckled mahogany brown,
the trenches were speckled with blood and those drowned.
What was the sin in sending a lone pawn,
into an unclear, hazy, and black dawn.
It was simple spruce bought of the Queen's tax,
in its demise compassion was naught lacked.
But that pawn was a thousand men charging,
It was a brigade of privates surging.
That unto the death of themselves, they ran,
at the order of Queens behind a light fan.
Were they to do and die in horrible fields,
when at the board of man's demise sat regales?
Send the horse, a thousand men of calv'ry,
to meet with their heart the blade of the adversary!
As the King and Queen sit with hearts craven,
they live vicariously, like the raven.
If the root of evil be desire,
the craven are sure to be sent to fire.
For as the Kaiser sends the rook shaking,
For as the Queen sends bishops quaking,
they put their own throat to the host'les lance,
they with their arms assume a proper stance.
Then magnanimously the Queen pushes,
the lance fast through the German's neck rushes.
Then the Kaiser takes a Brit and does thus;
from the edge of a ship his body rushed.
Cruelty is for the ones caring to prove,
the ones who have impossible mountains to move.
The Queen catches the Kaiser with contempt,
and leaves half of the known world unkempt.
At the chess board regales rule for days,
on the never-ending Sun, giving rays.
