Volition

An animal or beast
has freedom but not freewill

A man or human being
has freewill but not freedom

The first can do but can't choose
The latter can choose but can't be

The first is free and roam wild
The latter is under bondage
and bent against God

But if a man can't choose

Then what is he ? ...

What you impart in here, reminded me of a debate we had way back college days, which I lost for lack of adequate knowledge in religion. I do believe that as long as we are part of an organization, social or political, we cannot really have absolute freedom. We have the freewill to choose but we must be responsible to accept the consequences of our choice..

In political system, one can't have absolute freedom and power. It will abuse it. So its good to have a check and balance. I like your last line. There's a sense of responsibility in every person's choice. If a person can't make a choice then he is not responsible. Can we sue and take an ox to court if it cross the fence and ate and trampled our rice patty ? But the owner does or is somewhat responsible.

we get to choose...but are we puppets of fate, like Oedipus...or a combination of free will and fate.

animals hunt to survive...for us it is just sport...

maybe it would have been better had we not been blessed with reason.

A thought that animal is to freedom and human is to liberty. There's a Giver of moral laws and human didn't just stumble on them but if they can't choose then they have regress to the level of an animal.
