The Sad Truth

The Sad Truth

A Poem by Victoria Harlequin
"

Ranging from depression, eating disorders, murder, gang initiation, and other important-- but ignored -- problems that go on in this world, this is the sad truth...

"

They stand in a group

Like a pack of wolves

Eyes glowing yellow

Teeth sharper than blades

Sonya sits in her room

Slicing her wrists

As if they were sticks of butter

Not shedding a tear

Michael runs through the alley

Breathing heavy and quick

The football team chasing him

Because he kissed another boy

Brother and sister lost

Hiding from their parents

Not wanting to bleed anymore

So they work on their own

Mary stares in the mirror

Wincing as she touches the bruise

The door slams open

Her husband is back for more

A girl picks on another

The cheerleaders laugh along

As people pass by to see

She stops ashamed of herself

9 years old all alone

A little girl's dad comes home

She begins to cry and whine

When he takes off his belt

Brett walks in his trailer

To find his mom on the couch

He just got home from practice

She hands him a bag of white powder

Little Robert sits in the basement

In front of the video camera

He holds his arms close

In nothing but his boxers

Chelsea is shaking in her car

Looking at the bank

She puts on her mask and sighs

Getting out the car with her Glock 17

Mariah rushes in her bathroom

Slamming the door once again

She sticks a finger down her throat

And disposes more of her life

Two close friends go to a party

Having the best time ever

Sniffing extacy through a straw

And waking up next to strangers

Becca sprints to her bedroom

Searching for a weapon

Then her mom angrily walks in

And Becca shoots five times

15 years old and on her own

Sauntering on the streets

Mini skirt and a tube top

Another customer pulls up beside her

A single middle-aged mother

Tip toes in her kids' room

Quietly pulling out her knife

Saying, "I'll always love you babies..."

Ryan goes out onto his patio

Wishing his wife would come back

He pulls out his tie

Fastening it around his neck

Misty marches out of prom

Into the deserted alley

Four boys come out of the shadows

Cornering her against the dumpster

A freshmen is thrown down

Cowering away from the seniors

They surround him slowly

And begin to kick him

Kenny walks towards the B13

Nervous and barely walking straight

Kenny hopes they'll accept him

He takes his beating like a man

Two teen-aged boys laugh

Throwing alcohol bottles fiercely

Then lighting matches

Setting the house to flames

Randall logs onto AIM

Checking his friend requests

He finds SxyGrl#1 and

plans to meet "her" later

Mrs. Seymor waits for Jake

Excited about what's next

Everyone leaves class except him

And she hurriedly locks the door

Duct tape silences their screams

So the couple is helpless

Their kidnapper comes in

A wide grin spreads across his face

Juanita and Sean in love

Have been together forever

But once she finds out she's with child

Sean bolts leaving her desperate

Christina comes from a Hispanic home

Proud of who she is

And when others see her pride

They beat her until she has no more

Lucy covers her ears

Not wanting to hear the shouts

She knows her mother is leaving

And her father isn't going to stop it

Shane is called down to the

school office; he is relieved

Only to find out that

His parents were in a fatal car crash

A college student's partying

Causes him to drink over ten beers

He thinks he's sober enough to drive

But he ends up hitting a semi

Gambling leads to a dead end

When Antony goes too far

He ends up in debt with the mafia

Since he can't pay, they end his life

Sadie drives down the highway

Going ten miles over the limit

She turns on the bridge and

speeds into the river

Justin left his sister months ago

He went into armed forces

Then one day, his sisters gets a letter

Learning of Justin's death

When it's all said and done

Nobody really matters

People don't pay attention

So lives are lost each day

Drug abuse attacks teens...

Rape isn't spoken of...

Murder is irrelevant...

Suicide is only pitied...

A girl sits at home

Seeing and hearing it happen

Which encourages her to write about them

That girl is me...

This is a myriad of issues that people do casually accept but these aren't problems to be passive about. Through imagery this poem brings perspective on what others experience and reminds us of the value of humanity.

This piece captures so many of of life's problems, and it paints them fresh in our minds. We live in a dark, scary world, and I think it's up to the writers to make it a bit more known to us all. Great work, here.

Sad but unfortunately so true! This should be read by all adults who think kids and teens have it easy these days. Every generation of youths had its own share of trials and this one sure has plenty. Perhaps due to technology, and media coverage, it has become more apparent, or it has put new ideas into vulnerable minds.

Thanks for sharing this write. Hopefully less compassionate people will learn from it too.

...yes, as humans, what a jumble we make of our lives...
and you capture this well
'people don't pay attention'
deep and disturbing

I think I like it a lot. I think you have talent. I think you should write and write some more...

An emotionally charged piece with so much truth behind it. I fully agree 100% with katie for it's easy to focus on ourselves yet we forget about other people have feelings too.

An emotionally charged piece you have here. So many little truths that the common masses turn a blind eye to. If even one person out of ten, where to take a moment and actually look around them with eye's open. Alot of things like this would never come to pass.

A great write!

Honestly this brought on the tears.
I think anything with genuine truth can do that to me.
If we weren't so focused on ourselves we'd open our eyes to the trouble of others.
Great way of expressing these and I really liked the idea of telling a little story in each to portray the struggle or issue.
Truly great (:
