THE DREAM

THE DREAM

A Story by DIVYA
"

A dream with no element of reality

"

As we stood outdoors, a cloud of improbable brilliance rose into the distant skies.  Its luminous intensity so great, it outshone any measure of visible light as perceived by human eyes.  Mushroom shaped, it engulfed the sky, lighting up every nook and corner till the firmament itself turned to a blazing white gold. Strangely, this flash was devoid of heat or sound. Then I saw countless supersonic jets rise as small arrow heads against the silvery skies, circling the land below, dropping cold, lethal bombs, and releasing thick streams of smoke. The stratosphere sparked with sulfur and magnesium stars, glittering but deadly. I caught my kid, now as light as a bird in my hands and ran to the nearest enclosure I could find. Emerging hours later, I was enveloped by a haze of smoke and suspended ash, thick enough to slice, reducing the visibility to near zero. What petrified me most were the thousands of vehicles and other objects floating several feet above the ground that seemed strangely fluid under my feet. The beastly flare seemed to have affected the gravity field itself. I gazed at my reflection in the bathroom mirror, aghast to see my nose puckered like a dumpling, a mass of distorted flesh. There were gashes over my eyelids, ears and lips which hung loosely from my face, the connective tissue holding them disintegrated by an evil, unearthly force.  My toes tingled strangely and to my horror the digits had changed positions and congealed. I stumbled to my son. He seemed unconscious, breathing intermittently, like a broken bird. “No”, I prayed, “No. God do not let it end this way.” A voice in my head said, “It will be over soon.” I woke to the shrill alarm clock. Thank God it was just a dream.

I am so amazed by the life of dreams that surge through us, and come alive in our deepest places. This dream, oh how fierce it flowed in your mind. It seemed to take the very breath from your body and the wings from your soul. The world is full of horrors, walking the streets, filling the skies, burning all around us in madness. May you always find worlds of peace to take your dreams to havens of rest, dear Divya.

Wow, I like the alliteration in this. Your diction is so professional it isn't funny. This should have been published in my opinion.

Great story! :)

I always seem to have some of the weirdest dreams that when I wake up I have to hake my head at what transpired from my subconscious. There is no rhyme or reason for our dreams but they have a logic to the art of you you don't even see.

Thank you for stopping by Glen.
I suppose in a good way, waking up to find it was a dream.
To actually living the nightmare some folks have to endure in their countries.
I had this nightmare, the ex was back in my life. It was hell.

Sends shivers down one's spine and with certain world leaders vying and jockeying for supremacy at present, I pray such horrors as you so imaginatively portray in this poem, remain in only dreams and never become reality!
