Author's Note

DIVYA
Tom alter was an Indian actor of American descent. He was a television actor, best known for his work in Bollywood and the theatre. Alter was the son of American Christian missionaries of English and Scottish ancestry. His grandparents migrated to India from Ohio, United States in November 1916, when they arrived in Madras (now Chennai) Alter was fluent in Hindi, Urdu and knowledgeable of Indian culture. He acted in over 300 Bollywood movies apart from numerous TV shows, often playing the bad foreigner. In addition to acting, Alter also ventured into direction and was a sports journalist in the 80s and 90s. Alter has written three books, one non-fiction and two fiction, and in 2008 was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by the Indian government in recognition for his services to the field of arts and cinema. In September 2017, Tom was diagnosed with Stage IV skin cancer.[21] He died on 29 September in his residence in Mumbai. Tom Alter managed to do something his foreign contemporaries in Indian Cinema couldn't do. He transcended from being 'that English actor who could speak fluent Hindi' to just 'a great actor'.

What a heartwarming tribute to this man! If he has family in India, perhaps you could send it their way? Only 67 years old...so sad. Beautifully written, Divya. Lydi**
