Daymare

Daymare

A Poem by Beatrice Mars

You told me once,

That, Death is like

Falling asleep.

A bitter smile was

Upon your pale lips.

You know, better than anyone,

About nightmares.

You slipped in and out of

My life,

Teaching and preparing me

To fight my nightmares,

But you only come

When the sun shines,

Daymare.

Daymare, you stalked

Me like the sun, Whispering

In my ear,

Guiding me and showing me all

The horrors you could find.

In broad daylight

You showed me

Death and such things that were worse;

A parched child,

A woman unable

To save her family.

Daymare, you made me hate the sun.

I learned (in my school of bright windows)

To love the night,

The moon and the light

Of stars,

Incomprehensibly

Old.

They looked down on me

As if I were some

New friend

They did not know well enough

To help.

I kept quiet and hidden

All though the sunlight,

But Daymare,

You found me,

You took your delights.

Your cheap thrills

And

Highs forced me to run

Far away to somewhere dark.

Daymare, we raced

And we battled.

You dragged me into

The scorching sun,

Convinced you had

Won you spat

On my face, kicked me

And hit me.

You gloated and laughed.

But, Daymare, you were overconfident.

I lay still

'Till you left, sure I was dead.

I crawled in to the dark

And met a new friend;

Nightmare.
