"Last Refrain"

"Last Refrain"

A Poem by Valentine

                             "Last Refrain"

In the silence of the night, the eerie echo of a western train.
Bounces off of the canyons walls,singing its last refrain.
All is black...all that is heard,is a deeply keening sound;
The trains lonesome whistle...as down the rails it is bound.

In the valley...on a bed...one heart hears...loves last call.
Resounding off of the hallway...repeating itself, off the walls.
All is dark, the only noise...a deep...sad, keening cry.
Loves last...lonesome wail,the voice of loves...goodbye.

Canyon walls echoing...the last sounds they heard.
One a lonesome whistle...the other...goodbyes...last word.
For a time, all is black, in the silence, one last voice.
The lonesome sound of farewell...loves... final choice.

Western bound on that train,is heard the whistles wail;
Teardrops fall and hit the seat...agony of a love....that failed.
On toward the western sky,goes the...outbound train.
Carrying with it one bitter half of...loves last refrain.

Finally in the cool dark night the last train whistles call;
One huddled on the outbound train... one  to the bedroom wall.

you certainly captured and painted the scene ...the sorrow and lonliness all culminate in those closing lines ..nice job ...tho this is about two who have broken apart ..untill the end of your poem it so strongly reminded me of the night that my wife died and driving home to tell our children it was raining and this song came on the radio .. could hardly drive with the weeping ...it was a long time ago so don't feel sorry ;) ...

still bring a lump into my throat ... as does your poem :)

This is very good, I really enjoyed this poem. I love the romanticism of traveling by train and the lonesome cry of a night time train whistle. You captured love, broken hearts and being melancholy during a journey by the rails.
On a side note we used to have a basset hound who would howl with the train whistle when he heard them. I loved it!
Fantastic write Kathy, this is my favorite.

I love the character of steam trains and this captured all the memories associated with trains and memories of a journey!

stunning writing Kathie, the pain of leaving and the mix of the train racing through the night make this a beautiful but sad journey, the imagery is exceptional, I want to be there on the train but in happier times, the last line is an absolutely brilliant finale' thank's I think I'll keep this one :)

I like this kind of poetry. Story and place. Leaving the reader with place and sadness.

Train rides are fun. Especially in Europe. Serve food and drink. Easy to talk and dream.
The the poem was great until the last line and then it became greater yet!
