Jewel Thief

Jewel Thief

A Poem by VelvetPotato

Her door creaked open in the midst of the night,
Tip-toed tentatively in the shadows, out of sight,
Scanned the room, along with my bag,
Laid supplies, but the phone dropped and awoke the Hag!

She jumped out of bed, alarms sounded,
I backed in the corner, confused, dumbfounded,
Thought of booking it, but had been caught,
Now needed excuses, fables, plots!

The wrinkled old maid with cotton for hair,
Scowled, squinted and gave a fierce stare,
She croaked, "Get out of my bedroom, dirty crook!
And return the jewelry and pearls you took!"

"I'm going to call Emergency Services,
If you don't return my valuables, purchases!
I'll beat you with my walking cane,
You best return, or I'll bash your brain!"

She squared up and met my eyes,
She was going to lunge: that was no surprise.
I told her to calm down, though she thought it lies,
She pounced on my chest with a shrill cry,

Reflexively, I did all that I knew,
I drew my defence and pierced her thigh,
Quickly punched down so the medicine went through,
And pushed her off with a relieving sigh.

Rushed to my side, a colleague and friend,
I mused, "Mrs. Billings is sun-downing again,
Her memory trails, reality and illusion blend,
Better call her son, ask him to come in,
And get the antipsychotic medicine."
