Insipid Soiree

Insipid Soiree

A Poem by Vignette

Contrived conversation.

Hor d’oeuvres with frilly toothpicks.

Chintzy cocktail napkins.

Alcohol in plastic cups.

Crusty smirks with cloak-and-dagger eyes.

Stale jokes.

Uneasy laughter.

Silent games with silent rules.

Haughty etiquette.

Shallow pretense.

Fiction at every turn.

Strutting with flair.

An approving glance,

a grin,

says all there is to say.

Welcome to polite society.

I like you use of alliteration, it crackles and pops the images as they appear. The ones you used bring a 'plastic" sound to the poem, a sound befitting the subject. As you turn from "Crusty smirks with cloak-and-dagger" it falls to "Stale jokes" one of the more stale, thus poignant lines in the piece. I like it. I feel like I am at that party, leaving.

Glad you liked it. It's one of those parties that I'd be leaving too! I despise these kinds of phony and snobby affairs.
