A Wedding Poem

Unity

The state of being one

Not about what we have lost

But what we have won

 

Unified

By the lighting of these candles

To be a part of this moment

Is more than placing on a mantle

 

With the joining

Of these two souls

We will all be unified

And become a whole

 

Look around you

To see another’s face

Someone you don’t know

Now accepted with an embrace

 

One big family

Friends and family come

To smile and share this moment

A once in a lifetime custom

 

Take the light

And pass it to another

Come together as we share it

Let’s share a happily-ever-after

Author's Note

I was asked by my aunt to make a poem for her upcoming wedding in January. She will be having everyone light a candle before they say their vows and she wanted something to go with it. SHe wanted it to symbolize "unity" since lighting of a candle can mean many things

This is filled with so much hope and inspiration that I suspect she will like it instantly or would want a bit of reality injected into it. Not to say that it isn't realistic... but borders on the unapologetically positive that it may be taken to gloss over the challenges that life and relationships do often bring. Stanzas 1 & 4 do come across as real and authentic in that sense, delving into the concept of someone being unknown and the losses that we previously have suffered before coming to the altar. I hope you are getting the gist of my approach - this poem is really good with the "for better/in health" bit, it probably could be made even more solid with a "for worse/in sickness" bit.... without being too blunt or too obvious about it, mind. lol... I better stop now before I start confusing you.
