Your First Anniversary

Your First Anniversary

A Poem by Kirby Lund
"

This is a poem that just flowed out of my fingers while waiting for class to start. One year ago today, a friend took his own life.

"

The apartment is quiet—

My roommate went home

for the weekend.

I can’t believe it’s been a year.

The tears we’ve all shed

(for you)

Still haunt us, even to this day—

I can’t believe it’s been a year.

I can’t take my mind off of you

(though I never truly knew you).

I’ve heard the stories from all our friends—

Even the one where they dressed you in drag

Just to sneak you into homecoming coronation.

I can’t believe it’s been a year.

The problem with me thinking about you too much is this:

I’ve never had a problem with words, and, even writing this

(for you),

It has taken me all day to write. I can’t explain why

I can’t believe it’s been a year.
