An Amtrak Pantoum

An Amtrak Pantoum

A Poem by Kirby Lund
"

This is something I whipped up on a train ride back home over Easter vacation. There were a lot of annoying and interesting people on the train, and I couldn't help but write about them.

"

An Amtrak Pantoum

I.
The lady across the aisle just glared at me.
I don’t know what her problem is.
I really didn’t do anything wrong.
They all look the same to me.

I don’t know what her problem is—
She keeps looking over at me.
They all look the same to me,
All these old bitchy women.

She keeps looking over at me
To scorn every little move I make.
All these old bitchy women,
Not enough old men to keep them happy.

To scorn every little move I make,
She puts down her book and snarls her lip.
Not enough old men to keep them happy—
I wish she’d just leave me alone.

She puts down her book and snarls her lip.
The lady across the aisle just glared at me.
I wish she’d just leave me alone.
I really didn’t do anything wrong.

II.
The little blonde girl is running the car’s length
While her mom does nothing to stop her.
Parental discipline has gone out the window
Along with common sense.

While her mom does nothing to stop her,
The little girl digs through other people’s things.
Along with common sense,
There are several things this girl is lacking.

The little girl digs through other people’s things,
But does she know that this is wrong?
There are several things this girl is lacking—
One of these things is morality.

But does she know that this is wrong?
The little blonde girl is running the car’s length.
One of these things is morality;
Parental discipline has gone out the window.

III.
The man across the aisle is sound asleep,
Except when his hands flail around;
He’s just batting away bad dreams.
His head shakes sometimes, too.

Except when his hands flail around,
He’s completely motionless and silent.
His head shakes sometimes, too;
That’s nothing to worry about, I bet.

He’s completely motionless and silent—
The man across the aisle is sound asleep.
That’s nothing to worry about, I bet.
He’s just batting away bad dreams.
