I Saw Them

I Saw Them

A Poem by Corwin McAllister
"

Another Kaady Car Wash event: one morning before the lunch rush I saw a sparrow chasing a butterfly around in circles in the parking lot.

"

I saw them in the parking lot at work
At first glance they seemed to be cavorting
    Encircling

Each other in rapid hops and flutters
In air already ashimmer with the portent of
    Noon swelter

Like leaves caught in a small cyclone
Or children at play only without pretense
    To innocence

But In a flash it occurred to both of them
Their dance was getting neither anywhere
    Suddenly

The butterfly veered off to the left
Up over the fence sparrow in hot pursuit
    Their fate

Swallowed within the platinum glare
Diffused by an already thick dirty yellow
    Summer haze

Nice observation skills. I can always picture perfectly what you're writing about. Could feel the heat of the sun at the end. Which is nice since it's so cold now. Liked this a lot.
