"Alzheimer's Plight"

"Alzheimer's Plight"

A Poem by Zoe Anne

“Alzheimer’s Plight”

The misty cavities invade and reap the mind.

It shows no mercy.

As all cherished memories;

The joy that you had once felt:

Like that time you went to a carnival with your friends,

Or that magical night at Senior Prom,

Or your wedding day, or the first time you looked upon your children.

All the pain that you had once felt

When you had a first break-up,

When you didn’t get into that college that you wanted,

When you mourned the death of a loved one…

All of that is erased and forgotten.

Little by little.

The abilities that you develop throughout your life;

Driving a car,

Getting ready for work,

Walking, talking, eating. Living.

All of that is exterminated.

One by one.

Once it’s started,

There’s no going back,

Even though your mind is while your body is still going forward,

Until you finally take your one last breath of consciousness…

With all of your loved ones, dead or alive, looking on.
