thank you for your service

thank you for your service

A Poem by Alfred Kukitz
"

a veteran’s gift

"

thank you for your service

small voices climbing a mountain of thank you s
eternal eyes of innocence unknown to the uglies of war
in all the river and streams of earnestness
in all the silences filled with water’s flow
they say, “thank you”
“thank you for your service to our country”
i smile in response as the waters & mountains
wash over me

if they knew the crime, killing and maiming
of women, children and soldiers
they might stand aghast as what constitutes
service to our country and just what is this war.

War is certainly unnatural and condemn-able, yet those, like myself, who have not witnessed it are only shown through the eyes of others the true extent of the horror. More truth should be shed onto the matter from real people, because statistics from wars of other generations bear no relations to what is currently happening. Modern history is not the world wars it is the yesterdays and that is what we should be taught.

there is such a harshness in war...and things are done that are regretful...even when the intentions are good, and are just to help keep others free...
