Growing Up

Growing Up

A Poem by Alma Miller

A little girl

Went out to play

Determined to

Enjoy her day

It was her last

That summer day

For she would grow

And change, and gray

And little did this girl know

As she saw a falling jay

That sometime too

She would decay

And sometime too

She’d lose her way

Every day she grew and grew

That little girl who once could play

And oftentimes when she thought back

She remembered naught past yesterday

This is the curse of our old age

When we are cold and shut away

No more a game

No more to pray

As all convey

A sharp longing

To play

Like that little girl

On her last summer day
