Unrequited Love

Unrequited Love

A Poem by A. Stringfellow

Consumed and tortured by my own thoughts

Do I look okay?

Will I say the right thing?

For so long, I’ve kept these feelings to myself

Hoping, waiting for you to make the first move

But the not knowing the truth eats me alive and I cannot wait

I see you standing there, amongst the crowd, perfect as ever

I’ve fantasized about this moment again and again

The moment where I finally said what my heart felt

Three words, eight letters: “I love you”

Courage and hope propel me towards you

Finally living out my wildest dream

I picture your reaction, the way your eyes light up as the words leave my lips

Your hands reaching out towards me

Begging to pull me near and into your warm embrace

Looking deep into my eyes and feeling our souls connect

As you finally say the words I have been longing to hear

“I love you, too”

Reality shifts back into perspective as I approach you

The words come out syllable for syllable

Your eyes don’t light up

Taking a step back, puzzled and confused

My world shatters and my heart stops

The fantasy begins to burn like a freshly struck match

“I’m sorry, I don’t feel the same way”

As I watch you walk away with tears in my eyes

I realize just what unrequited love feels like
